Pune Police have confirmed that the Swargate sexual assault case will be tried in a fast-track court, ensuring swift justice for the victim. The accused, Dattatray Ramdas Gade (31), a resident of Gunat, Taluka Shirur, was arrested after a three-day manhunt and has been remanded to 12 days of police custody. A special public prosecutor will be appointed to handle the case.
Given the brutal nature of the crime, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has assured that the case will move swiftly through the judicial system. “We are committed to ensuring strict punishment for the accused. A fast-track trial will ensure that justice is delivered at the earliest,” he stated.
The special investigation team assigned to the case has been collecting forensic evidence and witness statements to strengthen the prosecution’s case. Police sources indicate that Gade’s criminal history, which includes cases of theft, robbery, and chain-snatching, will be presented in court to argue for the maximum sentence.
Gade was arrested on Thursday midnight after being captured by villagers in Gunat and handed over to the police. The Pune Police had deployed over 500 personnel, including Crime Branch officers, Pune Rural teams, and special units, to track him down.
Following his capture, Gade attempted suicide by hanging himself with a rope, but the attempt failed. Medical reports confirm strangulation marks on his neck.
In response to the crime, Pune Police have initiated a review of security at bus stands, railway stations, and other public places. Measures such as increased patrolling, QR code mapping, and improved street lighting are being implemented. Additionally, a ₹1 lakh reward has been announced for the informant who provided police with crucial details leading to Gade’s capture.
