Pune: The construction of the flyover at Khed Shivapur on the Pune-Satara highway is nearing completion, with one side of the bridge now open for traffic.
The transport department has allowed vehicles to use this newly constructed lane for a trial period of one month before the final layer of the road is laid. This step aims to ease congestion and improve traffic flow on the highway.
The project, which commenced in February last year, had led to significant disruptions in traffic as both lanes were diverted to service roads. The narrow service lanes, worsened by potholes during the monsoon season, caused severe traffic congestion in the area, drawing complaints from commuters and transporters alike.
However, the opening of one side of the flyover has already started reducing the burden on the service roads. Vehicles using the bridge have significantly eased movement in the area, and officials are optimistic that once the entire structure is operational, the long-standing issue of congestion will be fully resolved.
According to Ganesh Ghule, a representative from Nikhil Constructions, the contractor responsible for the project, the second side of the flyover is expected to be completed within the next four to five days. Once fully open, the flyover will streamline traffic and bring much-needed relief to commuters.
“For the next month, vehicles will be allowed to use the flyover before we apply the final layer of the road. This phased approach will ensure a smoother transition and optimal road quality,” said Ghule.
Commuters and local residents have welcomed the development, anticipating a significant improvement in traffic movement along the Pune-Satara highway. The completion of this project is expected to bring long-term benefits by reducing travel time and enhancing road safety.
