The Russia–Ukraine war crossed a sobering milestone on Thursday, June 11, 2026—its 1,569th day, officially outlasting the First World War, which lasted 1,568 days from July 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918 (four years, three months, and 14 days).

When Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the campaign was widely seen by Western officials and analysts as aiming for a rapid military advance and political pressure on Kyiv. Ukrainian resistance and logistical challenges prevented an early breakthrough, and the conflict later evolved into a prolonged war marked by shifting offensives and extended periods of limited territorial movement along parts of the front line.

Parallels With the First World War

Historians have drawn extensive comparisons between the two conflicts. Both began with rapid offensive pushes, Germany's charge toward Paris in 1914 and Russia's advance toward Kyiv in 2022, that were ultimately repelled, before descending into attritional, trench-based warfare.

When Ukrainian and Russian troops hunkered down in trenches in late 2022, historians described it as a return to World War I-style combat. Soldiers on both sides were often separated by just a few hundred yards, sometimes within sight of each other, conducting the same devastating artillery barrages and desperate charges across no man's land that defined the Western Front a century earlier.

"In many respects, this war in Ukraine is the one that most closely resembles World War I," French military historian Michel Goya told The New York Times.

Both conflicts also reshaped European geopolitics, redrawing military alliances and triggering a buildup of defence capabilities not seen in decades. Both introduced new battlefield technologies — World War I brought mass use of machine guns, chemical weapons, and tanks; the Ukraine war has been defined by drone warfare, autonomous systems, and precision-strike technology.

When Will the Russia–Ukraine War End?

There are very few signs of a quick resolution to the conflict. Recent assessments suggest Russia's territorial gains have slowed considerably, while Ukrainian officials report that Russian casualties continue to mount. Analysts also note that although Russia is still recruiting tens of thousands of soldiers each month, sustaining those numbers is becoming increasingly costly.

With peace negotiations stalled and neither side showing willingness to make major concessions, the war appears likely to continue. Opinion polls indicate that many Ukrainians do not expect the conflict to end before next year, potentially pushing its duration closer to that of World War II.
