This is about as precise a fit as possible. If the highly appealing Xiaomi 17 Ultra is understandably beyond your budget, and the equally impressive Xiaomi 17 feels a bit too small in terms of screen size, the Xiaomi 17T neatly occupies a space that many phone makers might struggle to target so accurately. Consider the Xiaomi 17T an alternative flagship, a value-focused flagship, or a way to access Leica’s photographic excellence with a more modest financial commitment.

Priced at ₹59,999 for the 12GB RAM/256GB storage variant and ₹64,999 for the 12GB/512GB model, the Xiaomi 17T offers strong value for money. This positions it well below the Xiaomi 17 (₹89,999) and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra (₹1,39,999), creating a substantial price gap. It is difficult to find a better smartphone around the ₹60,000 mark than the Xiaomi 17T. What alternatives come to mind? Perhaps the Motorola Signature with its Pantone-certified camera, or the stylish Vivo X300 FE, though that one is slightly more expensive. On the surface, it may seem like there are plenty of options, but in reality, the choices are quite limited.

The standout feature of the Xiaomi 17T is its camera, which preserves much of the flagship-level optical hardware, including Leica Summilux lenses, and crucially does not compromise on Leica’s image processing. This results in a pleasingly warm and realistic look to photos in a smartphone landscape increasingly dominated by artificial-looking images. As someone who still relies on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra more than any other current-generation phone for photography, I can say with confidence that the Xiaomi 17T fully deserves a place in any flagship discussion—the similarities in many real-world shooting situations are impossible to overlook.

The trio begins with a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto lens offering 5x optical zoom (extendable to a highly practical 120x), and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens—which might appear to be the weakest component of the setup. The Xiaomi 17T’s camera system excels in two key ways for photography enthusiasts. Most notably, it preserves the authenticity of the scene, avoiding heavy-handed AI enhancements that reshape images to suit an algorithm’s preferences instead of capturing the often beautifully imperfect reality.

Secondly, the telephoto camera performs exceptionally well when zooming in on distant subjects and, interestingly, also for telephoto close-ups. My only remark is that some daytime and outdoor shots appear slightly too bright in areas that should be shadowed, an issue that could be resolved with a minor adjustment to the image processing.

I’ve always appreciated how inviting Xiaomi and Leica’s approach feels, and the camera app is still the foundation of that experience. You’ll be encouraged to try different styles and angles, and more often than not, you’ll capture something that looks good. That said, I couldn’t find an AI on/off toggle in the camera interface, a feature I had liked on the 17 Ultra. Low-light photography requires some patience, but if you take the time to compose your shots carefully, this phone delivers excellent detail and colour accuracy, making night-time images one of its biggest strengths.

Looking past the cameras, the Xiaomi 17T is defined by a clear theme of restraint. Its specifications are anchored by MediaTek’s Dimensity 8500 Ultra chip, while the Motorola Signature, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, offers a different proposition. Neither can definitively claim superiority or label the other as inferior; I’m referring instead to the on-the-ground impressions that often sway tight buying decisions. That sense of restraint is also evident in the design.

Xiaomi deserves recognition for offering Violet and Blue colour variants in addition to the standard Black, but there is still not much flair beyond the palette itself. A glitter-infused finish on one of these options could have added some much-needed excitement.

There is little to fault in the overall construction and ergonomics. The device feels solid and well assembled, with premium materials throughout, and the Xiaomi 17T comes across as more compact than its 6.59-inch display size would imply. That display itself is a striking panel to use, and with a peak brightness of 3500 nits, it remains clearly legible even under direct sunlight. The 6500mAh silicon-carbon battery is notably larger than the Motorola Signature’s 5200mAh unit, and thanks to the combined optimisation of HyperOS and the hardware, it can comfortably deliver up to two days of use, even with heavy reliance on the camera.

Although the Xiaomi 17T can easily be seen as a value-focused flagship Android device, its flexibility and strengths extend well beyond that limited label. Xiaomi has successfully undercut many comparable offerings from Vivo and Oppo, and that is no small achievement. Overall performance leaves little to be desired, and this is complemented by strong battery life. As a photography-centric phone, it shows no noticeable gaps or flaws in that area. Any competitors that boast more camera features or superior imaging capabilities also come with a significantly higher price tag.
