Pune: In an effort to improve the traffic situation on one of Pune’s busiest roads, the Pune Traffic Police and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have implemented several changes between Yerawada and Kharadi.

As part of this initiative, modifications were made in traffic signal phases, intersection structures, U-turn locations, and right-turn options. These changes have resulted in an increase of 16 per cent to 19 per cent in traffic speed in the area compared to last year (January-February), according to an analysis by the traffic department. The measures have provided noticeable relief to daily commuters.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar had recently conducted a site inspection of Nagar Road and directed officials to address the heavy congestion in areas like Yerawada, Viman Nagar, Kharadi, and Wagholi. Following this, the traffic department conducted a thorough study and implemented the necessary changes with the support of the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Key Traffic Improvements Implemented

  • Yerawada-Shastrinagar Chowk: The right turn towards Kalyaninagar was causing congestion on the main road. It was eliminated and replaced with a semi-circular U-turn further ahead, reducing the traffic burden on Nagar Road.

  • Wadgaon Sheri Chowk: A new right turn was introduced near the Agnibaz Gateway to facilitate smoother movement towards Nagar.

  • Viman Nagar Chowk (Phoenix Mall): A major congestion point, this intersection had a right turn that was removed. The intersection was then converted into a signal-free zone, improving traffic flow.

  • Kharadi Dargah Chowk: The right turn at this location was closed, and a semi-circular U-turn was introduced near the Aaple Ghar bus stop, ensuring a smoother, signal-free movement of vehicles.

After implementing these modifications, the Pune Traffic Police used the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to monitor the traffic situation. The analysis showed that, compared to the same period last year, the average traffic speed on Nagar Road has increased by 16 per cent to 19 per cent, allowing smoother and more efficient movement of vehicles.
