Speaking on the theme “From Constraints to Creativity: Thriving as an Independent Filmmaker,” Wolman emphasized that the greatest threat to a filmmaker is not a lack of budget, but the decision to stop creating.

Continuous creation

Wolman emphasized what he described as a mantra of continuous creation, urging directors to move beyond the trap of waiting for “perfect conditions.”

He argued that the pursuit of the ideal budget or studio backing often results in creative stagnation, and instead encouraged filmmakers to work within their means by shaping narratives that require fewer locations, smaller casts, and a more economical production scale. Even the duration of a film, he suggested, can function as a strategic decision; one that prioritizes sustainability over grandeur.

Choosing art over despair

Situating this approach within a broader emotional and political reality, Wolman reflected on the persistence of global conflict and unrest. Acknowledging that war, violence, and hatred are ever-present, he framed filmmaking not merely as a professional pursuit but as a means of survival.

For him, the act of continually making films is essential to resisting despair, a way of staying alive, both artistically and emotionally, amid an increasingly fractured world.

Efficiency within constraints

Drawing on personal experience, Wolman outlined a different approach to crew management that challenges conventional production setups. He spoke of frequently working without assistants, a choice he described as one that accelerates decision-making while reducing overheads.

Extending this philosophy to casting, Wolman urged filmmakers to resist the lure of recognizable names. For him, artistic success depends less on star power than on emotional credibility, and he emphasized the importance of choosing strong actors who can carry the emotional weight of a film, rather than famous faces who may add visibility but dilute authenticity.

Learning from the "Underground"

Recalling his education in 1960s New York, Wolman championed the Underground Film Movement. He suggested that modern independent directors should focus on screening in smaller, intimate venues rather than competing for large, commercial theatres, something that builds a more loyal and engaged audience base.

The AI Warning

When asked about the rise of Artificial Intelligence in cinema, Wolman cautioned against its "rampant use." He argued that while AI might offer technical convenience, it fundamentally diminishes the tangible human experience that sits at the heart of great storytelling.
