Pune, 10th June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has withdrawn its proposed alternate-day water supply cuts for several eastern parts of the city supplied by the Bhama Askhed Dam. The decision was taken after residents continued to face muddy water supply and frequent disruptions over the past month.
PMC had earlier announced that the entire city would receive water on alternate days from June 15 due to declining water levels in the Khadakwasla dam system and concerns over delayed monsoon rainfall. Authorities said water conservation measures were necessary to ensure adequate supply until sufficient rainfall replenishes reservoir levels.
However, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has directed officials not to implement water cuts in areas supplied by the Bhama Askhed project until the issue of turbid water is fully resolved.
Local representatives had urged the administration to reconsider the decision, arguing that residents were already struggling with poor water quality and intermittent supply.
Areas supplied by the Bhama Askhed Dam include Viman Nagar, Dhanori, Lohegaon, Vishrantwadi, Chandan Nagar, Kharadi, Wadgaon Sheri, Nagar Road and several nearby localities. Residents in these neighbourhoods have reported muddy water supply for nearly four weeks.
The situation was further aggravated by power-related disruptions affecting the water treatment facility. Damage to an electricity line during ongoing works in Khed taluka led to interruptions in water supply in recent days.
Following a review meeting, the Commissioner ordered that alternate-day water supply should not be imposed in these areas until normal and clean water supply is restored.
The decision is expected to benefit a large population in East Pune. Most areas under wards one to six of the Vadgaonsheri Assembly constituency fall under the Bhama Askhed water supply network. Around 157 million liters of water are supplied daily to nearly 11.7 lakh residents in the region.
With the withdrawal of the proposed water cuts, lakhs of residents in East Pune have received temporary relief while the civic administration continues efforts to resolve the water quality issue.
