Pune, 10th June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to bring in water treatment experts from Surat to identify the cause of the persistent supply of murky and discoloured water in several eastern parts of the city.
The issue has affected thousands of residents supplied through the Bhama-Askhed water project and has remained unresolved for nearly a month.
Areas including Viman Nagar, Sanjay Park, Mhada Colony, SRA settlements, Yamunanagar, Rajiv Gandhi North and South, parts of Vishrantwadi, Dhanori, Lohegaon, Chandan Nagar, Kharadi, Nagar Road, and Wadgaon Sheri have been receiving yellowish water with an unpleasant odour.
While water samples tested in PMC laboratories were found fit for consumption, civic officials have been unable to determine why the water continues to appear discoloured.
The issue triggered complaints from residents and protests by local representatives, who demanded immediate action from the civic administration. Following growing public concern, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram visited the water treatment facility at Kuruli and reviewed the situation with officials and elected representatives.
According to preliminary observations, decaying algae present in the dam water is suspected to be the main reason behind the problem. Officials noted that the water appears clear when pumping operations are halted, but fine algae particles pass through the system once pumping resumes, affecting water quality.
PMC has begun repairs to critical components of the treatment plant, including the clarifier unit and filter beds. Civic officials expect water quality to improve after the maintenance work is completed.
During the review, Commissioner Ram also consulted water treatment specialists from Surat. The experts recommended increasing the dosage of chlorine and poly aluminium chloride to improve purification.
A team of specialists will soon visit the Bhama Askhed project to conduct a detailed inspection and recommend long-term solutions to resolve the issue permanently.
