Pune, 9th July 2026: The Maharashtra government has constituted the Pune Traffic Committee to streamline the planning, financing, execution and monitoring of Pune's major transport infrastructure projects, including the Underground Road, High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) and the Ring Road. The government resolution announcing the decision was issued on Wednesday.
The move follows Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' directive to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementing these large-scale projects. Acting on the instructions, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram submitted a proposal to the state government in June, paving the way for the formation of the committee.
The newly formed body consists of a High-Level Committee and an Executive Committee.
The High-Level Committee, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, includes the Deputy Chief Ministers, the Minister of State for Urban Development, the Chief Secretary, senior officials from key government departments, the Pune Mayor, Leader of the House, Standing Committee Chairman and the PMC Commissioner.
Representatives from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) will also participate in matters related to the Inner Ring Road project.
The Executive Committee will be headed by PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. Its members include the PMRDA Commissioner, Pune Police Commissioner, City Engineer, Chief Engineer (Projects), PMRDA Chief Engineer and the Additional Municipal Commissioner, who will serve as Member Secretary.
Officials from PCMC and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner will also be part of the committee for Ring Road-related matters.
The committee's jurisdiction will cover areas under the PMC, PMRDA and PCMC.
The High-Level Committee will provide policy direction, approve financial proposals, coordinate with different departments, facilitate land acquisition, arrange funding and monitor the overall progress of the projects.
Financial proposals will be routed through the Urban Development Department before being placed before the Finance and Planning Department. The Chief Minister will also appoint the project's financial adviser, four non-official members and technical advisers.
The Executive Committee will oversee day-to-day administration, technical implementation and coordination among various government agencies to ensure the timely execution of the projects.
The state government expects the new committee to improve coordination between multiple agencies, simplify decision-making and accelerate the implementation of Pune's key transport infrastructure projects. The initiative is aimed at reducing delays and ensuring smoother execution of projects that are expected to significantly improve mobility across the Pune metropolitan region.
"The formation of the Pune Traffic Committee is a landmark decision that will help reduce travel time for citizens and encourage the use of public transport. It will also ensure the city's planned and holistic development," said Ganesh Bidkar, Leader of the House, Pune Municipal Corporation.
