

Pune: MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) in collaboration with Jindal Stainless, has launched a specialised course focused on the application of stainless steel in tunnel and underground infrastructure development.
The initiative comes at a time when India is expected to invest over ₹5 lakh crore in tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects over the next decade, creating strong demand for advanced engineering skills and durable construction materials.
The program, titled ‘Stainless Steel: A Sustainable, Green & Innovative Material for Tunnel and Underground Space Construction’, integrates academic learning with real-world industry practices, enabling students to understand the role of advanced materials in modern engineering projects.
With India set to invest an estimated ₹5 lakh crore in tunnel and underground infrastructure over the next 10 years, driven by metro rail expansion, highways, railways, hydropower projects and underground transport systems, the demand for durable and long-lasting construction materials is increasing significantly.
Stainless steel is emerging as a key material due to its corrosion resistance, strength and long lifecycle performance in challenging underground environments.
The specialised course focuses on preparing students to address these infrastructure needs by developing expertise in material selection, design applications and sustainable construction practices.
The program has commenced with an initial batch of 25 students and includes a structured learning model comprising classroom teaching, practical exposure and industry engagement.
The program is jointly delivered by six faculty members from MIT-WPU along with industry professionals, ensuring a balanced approach between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
A key feature of the initiative is its focus on developing engineers who are industry-ready and capable of contributing to large-scale infrastructure projects from the early stages of their careers.
The program also emphasises applied learning, enabling students to work on real engineering challenges and develop solutions relevant to tunnel construction and underground infrastructure.
The initiative is expected to benefit students by enhancing employability, improving technical competence and providing direct exposure to industry standards and practices. For India, it supports the development of a skilled workforce capable of delivering durable, efficient and sustainable infrastructure solutions.
The course is designed not only as an academic offering but also as a long-term capacity-building initiative for the engineering sector.
