Pune, 13 March 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to appoint 225 engineering interns to support civic works as the recruitment of junior engineers continues to remain delayed. The interns will be engaged through the central government’s Urban Learning Internship Program (TULIP).
For several years, PMC has not conducted large-scale recruitment for junior engineers. Many existing engineers have been promoted while several others have retired, leaving multiple positions vacant. As a result, the workload on the remaining engineers has increased significantly, affecting the efficiency of civic operations.
In 2022, PMC recruited 135 junior engineers. However, the recruitment process for another 169 posts has been pending for more than two years. With important departments facing staff shortages, the civic body has decided to temporarily rely on engineering interns.
Under the TULIP program launched by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, engineering graduates can undergo one year of practical training with urban local bodies. The interns receive a monthly stipend of ₹15,000.
PMC departments have requested 225 interns in total, including 180 civil engineers, 25 electrical engineers and 20 mechanical engineers. The civic body had invited applications for the program and received 809 responses. Candidates will be selected based on document verification and academic merit.
The selected interns will gain hands-on experience in preparing project estimates, drafting proposals, handling tender processes and conducting site inspections. Their work is also expected to support PMC departments dealing with infrastructure and civic development.
Deputy Commissioner of the Servants’ Class Department Vijaykumar Thorat said, “Through the TULIP program, 225 engineering graduates will get practical experience by working with the municipal corporation. It helps young engineers gain exposure to real projects while also assisting the administration in managing its workload.”
