Pune, 25th June 2026: With the arrival of the southwest monsoon, the Sahyadri mountain ranges have turned into a lush green landscape dotted with waterfalls, streams and mist-covered hills. The picturesque scenery has drawn large numbers of tourists and trekkers to forts and trekking destinations across Maharashtra.
However, the Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangh (AMGM) has appealed to visitors to ensure that safety remains their top priority while enjoying monsoon adventures.
According to AMGM, many mishaps are caused by avoidable mistakes such as standing beneath powerful waterfalls, entering fast-flowing streams, venturing into unfamiliar areas without guidance, or taking selfies near cliff edges and fort walls. The organisation has urged tourists to avoid unnecessary risks and act responsibly throughout their trip.
The federation said that while the rainy season offers breathtaking natural beauty, it also brings several hazards. Slippery trails, dense fog, poor visibility, strong water currents and the possibility of landslides make trekking considerably more dangerous. Every year, several accidents occur because visitors underestimate these risks or engage in unsafe activities.
Trekkers have been advised to travel only with experienced groups, check weather forecasts before planning their journey, carry essential safety gear including a first-aid kit, torch and power bank, and inform family members about their itinerary.
Those visiting unfamiliar destinations should seek the assistance of local guides and follow the instructions of group leaders. The federation also appealed to visitors to preserve forts, historical monuments and the natural environment by avoiding littering and vandalism.
The organisation further advised tourists not to trek alone in unfamiliar places, avoid alcohol during trekking, stay away from dangerous viewpoints, waterfalls and swollen streams, and seek shelter during thunderstorms instead of remaining in open areas. It also urged visitors not to perform dangerous stunts for social media content at the cost of their safety.
In case of any emergency during trekking or outdoor activities, tourists can seek assistance from the Maharashtra Mountaineers Rescue Coordination Centre (MMRCC), which operates a 24x7 helpline at 7620-230-231.
AMGM President Umesh Zirpe said, “The monsoon in the Sahyadris offers an unforgettable experience, but adventure should never come at the cost of safety. Visitors must enjoy the mountains responsibly, as careful planning and sensible behaviour can prevent many avoidable accidents.”
