During the hearing, the court questioned the accused, Bhimrao Kamble, several times and gave him an opportunity to respond. However, he remained silent throughout the proceedings.

The court observed that while an accused has the right to remain silent during trial, he cannot remain passive when questioned by the court.

The prosecution told the court that the accused's mental health and potency reports confirmed that he was mentally fit and capable of committing sexual assault.

It argued that the brutal rape and murder had been established through circumstantial evidence, witness testimonies, and medical findings. According to the prosecution, the victim suffered multiple injuries, reflecting the extreme cruelty of the crime.

Seeking the maximum punishment, the government prosecutor argued that the accused was beyond reform and posed a serious threat to society. Referring to his previous criminal record, the prosecution said he had escaped conviction in two earlier cases but had continued committing offences.

"Considering the nature of the crime and the accused's criminal history, only the death penalty would be an appropriate punishment," the prosecution submitted.

The victim's family also urged the court to award capital punishment, saying it would send a strong message to society and help deter such crimes in the future.

The defence, however, argued that there were inconsistencies in the prosecution's version of events and maintained that the accused was innocent.

His lawyer said the 65-year-old was deeply disturbed by the incident and questioned whether a person of his age could commit such a brutal crime. The defence requested the court to consider life imprisonment instead of the death penalty.
