Pune, 30 October 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has planned to expand its ongoing Mutha riverbank development and flood prevention project from Rajaram Bridge–Warje stretch up to Nanded City–Shivne. With the expansion, the total project cost is expected to rise from ₹300 crore to ₹450 crore.
Originally, the project was planned only from Rajaram Bridge to Warje, to protect the flood-prone Ektanagar area. However, frequent flooding caused by heavy rainfall and increased water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam prompted PMC to include the adjoining areas of Nanded City and Shivne under the plan.
Several homes in Ektanagar, Vitthalnagar, and Nimbjanagar had been destroyed during recent floods, causing heavy losses to residents.
Following visits by state leadership and directions for immediate preventive measures, PMC expanded the project’s scope. Officials said that due to the addition of new components and rising costs of materials, taxes, and royalties, the revised estimate has reached ₹449 crore, including GST. Though the civic body has sought ₹300 crore in financial aid from the state government, the funds are yet to be approved.
According to civic officials, the project will include several major components designed to strengthen flood control and improve the riverfront’s appearance. The river walls will be widened up to 90 meters to increase water-carrying capacity, and new boundary walls will be built around stormwater channels in the Ektanagar area.
An 800-meter-long drain will carry rainwater directly to the river, while a Jackwell system will help pump out excess water when river levels rise.
Additionally, the plan includes constructing four ghats, four ramps, two viewing decks, and dedicated pedestrian and cycling tracks along the river.
PMC officials expressed confidence that the expanded project will help control future flooding and provide much-needed relief to residents of Ektanagar and surrounding areas while also giving the Mutha riverfront a cleaner and more organized look.
