Pune, 21 March 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation has intensified its citywide drive to bring roadside chambers to road level, following instructions from Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram.
The directive was issued during a review meeting on Friday, where officials were asked to accelerate the pace of work and ensure maximum chambers are aligned daily.
So far, around 1,283 chambers, including those on stormwater drains and sewer lines, have been levelled across Pune. The road department is handling stormwater chambers, while the drainage department is responsible for sewer line chambers.
The initiative aims to reduce accidents caused by sunken chamber covers that often dip below road level after resurfacing. To speed up execution, the PMC has appointed multiple contractors in each ward, with daily progress reports being submitted directly to the commissioner for close monitoring.
However, the work has faced challenges, particularly during night hours. Residents and students have complained about noise from road cutting and repair activities, especially during the ongoing examination period.
Civic officials say efforts are being made to carry out work at suitable locations while minimizing inconvenience.
The campaign was launched on December 15 last year as part of the PMC’s pothole-free roads initiative, following directions from the Bombay High Court.
Earlier, nearly 2,000 chambers were levelled along the route of an international cycling event, but the project has now been expanded to cover the entire city.
