Pune, 15th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) on Sinhagad Road has started a citywide mapping project of underground utilities to improve infrastructure planning, maintenance and emergency response systems.
The civic body plans to map nearly 2,000km of underground infrastructure, including water pipelines, drainage lines and utility cables. At present, surveys covering nearly 600km along major road stretches are being carried out using advanced software systems.
Officials said the remaining work will be completed in phases during the current financial year.
According to PMC officials, the mapping project is expected to help identify locations where sewage lines may be coming in contact with water pipelines. The survey is also likely to assist the administration in identifying flood-prone areas across the city.
Officials said Pune previously lacked consolidated underground utility data, making excavation, repair and infrastructure planning difficult. The new mapping system is expected to help departments coordinate projects more efficiently and avoid repeated digging of roads.
The ICCC is simultaneously working on strengthening disaster management systems through real-time monitoring technology and digital infrastructure.
Flood sensors are being installed along rivers and water bodies to improve alert systems during emergencies. The civic administration is also carrying out mapping of rivers and nullahs, while nearly 500 smart poles are proposed for monitoring and surveillance across the city.
As part of the initiative, drones have been introduced at the PMC fire department’s Katraj fire station on a trial basis. Officials said the drones will help provide real-time visuals during fire emergencies and assist teams in assessing the nature of incidents and equipment requirements more quickly.
The civic administration plans to gradually introduce drone systems at additional fire stations across Pune.
The ICCC is also developing software systems aimed at identifying illegal properties, unauthorized constructions and property tax deviations through digital mapping and data analysis.
Apart from this, the center is monitoring traffic movement under the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), tracking garbage vehicles and assisting civic authorities in planning missing road links across the city.
