Pune, 16 December 2025: Pune will be freed from chronic traffic congestion by creating a strong and integrated public transport system, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Monday. He stated that the state government, with support from the Centre, is committed to Pune’s sustainable, modern, and inclusive development, with public mobility at its core.
Fadnavis was speaking at a function held at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch, where he inaugurated, launched, and laid foundation stones for 53 development projects of the Pune Municipal Corporation worth ₹3,000 crore. Several senior ministers, elected representatives, and top officials were present at the event.
The Chief Minister said a comprehensive mobility plan has been prepared for Pune to address traffic bottlenecks. The plan focuses on expanding the Metro network, strengthening PMPML bus services, completing the Ring Road, and improving road connectivity through flyovers and tunnels.
He added that Pune’s growth is being planned with future needs in mind, using modern technology, data-driven governance, and artificial intelligence to make the city more efficient and liveable. He also said Pune aims to emerge as a leading data centre hub, not just in Maharashtra but across the country.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar cautioned that Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the surrounding district could see the population cross two crore in the coming years, which will increase pressure on infrastructure. He stressed the need to focus on traffic management, water supply, and environmental protection.
Pawar criticised faulty infrastructure planning in the past, saying citizens often pay the price for poorly designed flyovers even after officials responsible have retired.
Pawar also issued a strong message to the Pune Police, stating that the government has provided adequate funds, manpower, and modern technology to strengthen law enforcement.
He directed the police commissioner to ensure that criminal elements, including the ‘Koyta Gang’, are eliminated from the city. He assured that there would be no political interference and no shortage of funds, but warned that gang violence and fear must not return to Pune.
Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol said the city’s development has gained momentum due to multiple infrastructure projects. He highlighted the rapid progress of the Pune Metro, which now carries nearly two lakh passengers daily, and the improvement in Pune airport’s national ranking, adding that connectivity from the city will continue to expand.
Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram presented the project overview, while officials also inaugurated new Metro services and police facilities, including the offices of senior police officers and five police stations, as part of efforts to improve urban services and public safety.
