Pune, 15 December 2025: The Maharashtra State Election Commission on Monday announced the schedule for the long-pending elections to 29 civic bodies across the state, including major municipal corporations such as Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said polling will be conducted on January 15, while the counting of votes will take place the following day, January 16.
Addressing a press conference, Waghmare said the nomination process will begin on December 23 and continue until December 30. The scrutiny of nomination forms will be carried out on December 31. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations until January 2, after which the final list of contesting candidates along with symbol allotment will be released on January 3.
The announcement comes in line with directions from the Supreme Court, which had instructed that elections to local self-government bodies must be completed before January 31 under any circumstances.
Following these directions, the Election Commission had earlier declared elections for municipal councils, and has now formally announced the municipal corporation polls. Elections to district councils are expected to follow.
To ensure transparency and prevent any undue influence during the electoral process, the administration has imposed a complete ban on the transfer of officials and staff until the elections are concluded.
The upcoming polls are expected to play a crucial role in shaping local governance across Maharashtra, especially in key urban centres where civic bodies have remained without elected representatives for an extended period.
