Pune, 12th August 2026: Around 20 small industries in and around Chakan MIDC are preparing to relocate because of poor infrastructure and worsening traffic conditions, industry representatives said on Wednesday. Their relocation could put nearly ₹1,000 crore in business and around 4,000 direct and indirect jobs at risk.
Chakan is one of India's major automobile manufacturing hubs, but industry representatives said deteriorating infrastructure is increasingly affecting industrial operations. Poor roads, traffic congestion and delays in transporting workers and goods are raising costs and disrupting production schedules.
Nearly half of the internal and main roads in the industrial area are reportedly in poor condition. Monsoon rains have worsened potholes, while narrow roads, encroachments and trucks parked along roadsides are contributing to traffic congestion.
Industry representatives said the problems are affecting worker shift timings as well as the movement of raw materials and finished goods.
A five-kilometre journey can sometimes take nearly two hours, said Dilip Batwal, chief officer of the Federation of Chakan Industries. He said such delays have become a production and employment issue for small industries, which cannot afford continuous transportation disruptions.
Industry representatives said more than 50 industries have shifted from Chakan to Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka in recent years because of infrastructure and transportation problems.
They warned that continued industrial migration could weaken Chakan's position as one of the country's leading automobile hubs and make it harder to attract new investment.
Industry representatives said the lack of coordination among government agencies is making it difficult to resolve infrastructure-related problems. They have demanded the appointment of a nodal officer who can coordinate with all agencies responsible for Chakan's industrial infrastructure.
They have also called for a joint review committee involving the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), district administration, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Public Works Department, Zilla Parishad, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, the local municipal council and industrial associations.
Urgent road repairs across Chakan MIDC and surrounding areas.
A dedicated Chakan Road Cell for pre-monsoon maintenance and regular road monitoring.
Measures to reduce traffic congestion and bottlenecks.
Better safety infrastructure in and around industrial areas.
Reliable electricity and water supply.
Better transport arrangements for students and workers.
Improved emergency access so critically ill patients can reach hospitals during the golden hour.
Representatives of Pramila Udyog Cooperative Society, Federation of Chakan Industries, Chakan Nagari Kruti Samiti and Chakan Industrial Association attended the press conference. They urged authorities to take immediate action to prevent further industrial migration and protect investment and employment in the Chakan industrial belt.
