Pune, 7th February 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration has postponed its proposal to increase property tax by 10% in the 2026–27 budget after facing opposition from several political parties. The Standing Committee was expected to take a decision on the proposal on Thursday (February 6), but decided to defer it to a future meeting.
The PMC last increased property tax in 2016, when rates were raised by 11%. Since then, there has been no tax hike for nearly a decade. Although the administration had placed similar proposals before the Standing Committee multiple times in the past, they were consistently rejected by corporators. Even during the last four years of administrator-led governance, no decision was taken to raise property tax.
This time, the administration proposed the 10% hike after the municipal elections, citing the need to boost revenue. However, over the past week, the proposal drew strong resistance from political parties and social organisations. They argued that the civic body should first focus on recovering outstanding dues and bringing newly constructed properties under the tax net, instead of burdening honest taxpayers.
As per rules, any decision on tax revision must be taken before February 20. With this deadline approaching, there was keen interest in Thursday’s Standing Committee meeting. However, due to continued opposition, the committee decided to defer the proposal to the next meeting.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the proposal to increase property tax was placed before the Standing Committee, but since there are differing opinions on the matter, it has been decided to take a final call in the meeting scheduled next week.
