Pune, 12 November 2025: In an action against the Pune Police, the Shivajinagar Court has ordered criminal proceedings against seven officers from Kothrud Police Station for allegedly assaulting women, using casteist slurs, and making sexually abusive remarks.
The court observed that the police conduct in this case appeared highly suspicious and directed that an independent officer handle the investigation.
The controversy dates back to August 2025, when a married woman who had fled Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar due to domestic abuse took shelter in Pune. Three women social workers who supported her were also allegedly targeted by the police.
According to the victims, Kothrud Police entered their house without a warrant, searched their belongings, including clothes and personal items, and later detained them at the station for nearly five hours under the pretext of interrogation.
During the detention, the women claimed they were subjected to verbal abuse, caste-based insults, and sexual humiliation by several officers. Despite lodging complaints with senior officials, their grievances were reportedly ignored.
The failure of the police to file an FIR initially sparked outrage among activists and political leaders in Pune, who staged a protest outside the Police Commissioner’s office demanding justice for the women. The incident raised serious questions about police accountability and the protection of women’s rights.
Taking cognizance of the matter, the Shivajinagar Court has now ordered that an FIR be registered against Assistant Police Inspector Prema Patil, constable Shruti Kadne, Amol Kamte from Sambhajinagar Police Station, woman constable Sanjivani Shinde, havaldar Vinod Pardeshi, cyber police officer Dhananjay Sanap, and former police officer Sakharam Sanap.
The court has also directed that the investigation be transferred to an Assistant Police Commissioner to ensure fairness and transparency. All eyes are now on how the probe unfolds in the coming weeks.
