Pune, 2nd September 2026: Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Equal Water Supply Scheme is nearing completion, with 88% of the work now finished. The civic body plans to begin metered water supply in phases, starting with zones where the required infrastructure has been completed.
PMC Additional Commissioner Pavniet Kaur said maintenance and repair work for completed infrastructure in 60 zones will be handed over to Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Meter readings will initially be carried out on a trial basis, followed by the preparation of dummy water bills.
“The plan is to start meter reading in selected zones within the next month and issue dummy bills to residents. This will help the PMC test the system before metered water supply is implemented across the city,” Kaur said.
The project was introduced to improve water distribution, reduce leakages and ensure more equitable supply across Pune. Although the scheme was approved eight years ago, several components are still being completed.
So far, the PMC has:
Completed 63 of the 83 planned water tanks
Laid around 1,000 km of new pipelines
Installed most of the planned 2.75 lakh water meters
Kept around 40,000 meters pending for installation
Kaur said another 16 tanks are expected to become operational by September 10. Land availability issues are delaying pipeline work in some locations, while opposition to meter installation has also slowed progress in certain areas.
The PMC has divided the city into 144 water supply zones under the scheme. Infrastructure work has been completed in 60 zones, including water tanks, pipelines and meters.
Once these systems are fully operational, L&T will take up their maintenance and repair. The PMC intends to complete the remaining work quickly so that metered water supply can gradually be extended to residents across the city.
The scheme is also aimed at improving water management as Pune continues to expand and its water demand rises. The civic administration plans to use meter readings to measure consumption more accurately and identify areas of water loss.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has repeatedly directed the PMC to implement metered water supply and improve water management.
Officials said the progress of the Equal Water Supply Scheme is also being reviewed through meetings involving the Chief Minister’s Office.
The PMC is now focusing on completing the remaining infrastructure and beginning trial operations in ready zones before moving towards citywide metered water supply.
