Pune, 28th August 2026: Recent action by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against hotels and restaurants over food quality and hygiene has begun affecting Pune’s hospitality industry. Some restaurants have reported an 18–20% decline in customer footfall following the inspections and related reports.

The FDA action has created a sense of uncertainty among customers, with some people becoming cautious about dining out even at restaurants that have not faced any action. Customers who earlier focused mainly on taste, service and price are now paying greater attention to food safety.

Some diners are asking to see restaurant kitchens and are seeking details about when ingredients such as chicken and paneer were purchased. A few have also asked to see purchase bills or invoices.

Restaurant operators, however, say customers cannot normally be allowed into kitchens because hygiene and safety rules restrict the entry of unauthorised people.

Family dining establishments are reportedly facing greater pressure as parents are becoming more concerned about food safety when dining out with children.

Some hotel operators said this has contributed to an 18–20% decline in customers at establishments that traditionally attract a large number of families.

The increased FDA inspections have also made some people planning to open new hotels and restaurants more cautious.

Business owners are concerned that even an issue related to food storage, temperature control, raw material quality, employee hygiene or documentation could result in regulatory action and affect a newly launched business.

A representative of the hotel industry said FDA action to ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene standards is necessary. However, problems at one establishment should not lead customers to view the entire hotel industry with suspicion.

Most hotel operators in Pune take food quality, hygiene and customer safety seriously, the representative said. The industry believes the administration should also undertake public awareness efforts to reduce the fear and uncertainty among customers following the recent action.
