Pune is experiencing a steady rise in temperature, with the mercury reaching around 38°C, raising concerns about possible heatwave conditions in the city.

In view of the increasing heat, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued an advisory urging residents to take extra care of their health and follow precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.

The civic body has emphasized that maintaining adequate hydration is the most important step during extreme heat. Citizens have been advised to drink water regularly even if they do not feel thirsty, ideally every half hour, to prevent dehydration.

While working outdoors, people should cover their head, neck and face with a wet cloth to protect themselves from direct sunlight.

The advisory also recommends including water-rich fruits and vegetables in daily meals. Fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, grapes, pineapple and vegetables like cucumber can help maintain hydration levels.

Residents have also been asked to keep their homes cool by using thick curtains during the day and allowing ventilation at night, along with fans or damp cloths to reduce indoor heat.

The municipal corporation has also suggested wearing light, loose cotton clothes while stepping outside. Using umbrellas, caps and sunglasses can help protect from strong sunlight.

Citizens are encouraged to consume refreshing drinks such as oral rehydration solution (ORS), buttermilk, lemon water, mango panna and lassi, which help maintain electrolyte balance in the body.

At the same time, the civic body has cautioned residents against certain habits during extreme heat. People should avoid going outdoors between noon and 3 pm when the sun is strongest. Heavy physical work in the sun, walking barefoot outdoors and wearing dark or tight clothing should also be avoided.

Consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee and sugary drinks has been discouraged as these beverages can reduce the body’s water levels and increase the risk of heatstroke.

The advisory further warns against eating stale or high-protein food during extreme heat and recommends avoiding cooking in closed rooms that trap heat indoors.

The municipal corporation has also appealed to citizens to take care of animals during the hot weather. Livestock should be kept in shaded shelters and provided with adequate water and green fodder, while workplaces should ensure the availability of cool drinking water for workers.
