Pune is experiencing intense April heat, with temperatures climbing past 40°C and leaving residents struggling to cope. While roads appear deserted during peak afternoon hours, swimming pools across the city are witnessing heavy crowds as people look for ways to cool down and stay active.

The sudden rise in temperature has significantly increased footfall at pools. Facilities that usually see around 50 to 60 visitors a day are now accommodating nearly 350 to 400 people.

Along with regular members, special summer batches have added to the rush, with a noticeable rise in participation from children. Some centers have also introduced dedicated baby pools for toddlers as young as two to three years old.

Women’s participation has also grown due to the availability of separate timings and a safer environment. Pools are operating throughout the day, starting early in the morning until late evening, with multiple batches scheduled to handle demand.

“Pools are running at full capacity during summer, with around 15 to 16 batches conducted daily. Water quality, including pH levels and cleanliness, is checked regularly, and additional lifeguards have been deployed to ensure safety,” said Rajesh Sapkal, Sports Manager at Solaris Sports Club.

“The municipal body inspected all swimming pools before the summer season to ensure proper facilities and safety standards. Lifeguard availability was verified, and trainers were also given lifesaving training to strengthen emergency response,” said Asha Raut, Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Sports Department.
