Pune, 18 November 2025: Illegal activities such as matka gambling, banned gutkha sales, and the supply of dangerous narcotics have once again surfaced in Pune, increased concerns about rising underground networks. Recent police operations show that these activities are becoming increasingly active despite repeated warnings from top officials.
A Crime Branch operation under the Faraskhana police led to the seizure of mephedrone (MD) worth around ₹12 lakh. The team also took action against two police personnel accused of ignoring illegal trade in the area, and a departmental inquiry has been initiated.
Investigations revealed that areas such as Budhwar Peth and Laxmi Road were witnessing open sale of matka slips, gutkha packets, and MD drugs. During a raid, police arrested Sharanappa Katimani and seized 59 grams of MD from his possession, confirming that a narcotics network has once again become active in the city’s central zones.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has repeatedly instructed strict action against such activities, yet gambling and drug sales continue to reappear, highlighting persistent gaps in enforcement.
Simultaneously, Pune Police have intensified action on matka gambling dens. Nandkumar Naik, linked to a major matka racket, was detained for one year under the MPDA Act.
In several parts of the city, banned gutkha continues to be sold openly through local networks. Authorities have also discovered illegal hookah parlours operating inside some hotels, prompting calls for stronger, continued enforcement to curb these activities in Pune.
