Pune, 1st June 2026: Lohegaon Airport’s long-awaited expansion project has started moving forward as discussions have begun at the senior administrative level to secure land required for the development.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol is actively following up on the matter, particularly regarding the transfer of 40 acres of defense land needed for the project.
With passenger traffic and aircraft movement increasing rapidly in Pune, authorities believe expansion of the airport has become essential. The project requires nearly 300 acres of land in total.
Of this, around 260 acres belong to private owners and various state government departments, while the remaining 40 acres are currently under the control of the defense authorities.
Murlidhar Mohol said, "Discussions are underway at senior levels to obtain the defense land needed for the airport expansion. The required land is crucial for carrying out major infrastructure upgrades at the airport."
As part of the expansion plan, the airport runway will be extended to improve flight operations and increase capacity. The project also proposes the construction of a separate terminal for private helicopters and charter aircraft, which have seen a steady rise in operations from Pune in recent years.
Officials believe that a dedicated general aviation terminal will help streamline the movement of non-scheduled aircraft and reduce congestion at the existing terminal.
In addition, Pune Airport is also set to get its first dedicated Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. Once operational, aircraft maintenance and repair work can be carried out directly at the Pune airport itself, reducing dependence on other cities for servicing.
