Pune, 18 March 2026: A sudden overflow of the Mutha canal on Tuesday evening caused severe flooding in Ghosavi Vasti at Manjari Budruk, Pune, damaging nearly 50 huts and affecting several families. The incident occurred around 6 pm, leaving residents with little time to react as water quickly entered their homes.
The flooding was reportedly triggered by a large release of water from the Municipal Corporation’s jackwell project in Mundhwa. According to Irrigation Department Executive Engineer Mohan Badhane, the situation worsened due to blockages in the canal, which led to water accumulation and eventual overflow.
As water gushed through the area, it also spread onto the Manjari–Wagholi road, creating panic among commuters and local residents. The flow extended from Ghule Vasti up to the nearby railway bridge, severely impacting daily life.
Several homes lost essential items, including food grains, bedding, and household belongings, while local businesses also suffered losses.
In response, the administration immediately stopped the water release from the jackwell project and deployed JCB machines to clear water hyacinth and debris obstructing the canal. Efforts are ongoing on a war footing to restore normal flow and prevent further flooding.
Senior Police Inspector Babasaheb Nikam from Manjari Police Station visited the site with his team to control the situation and calm distressed residents. Civic officials, including Assistant Commissioner Ravi Khandare, along with irrigation department engineers and local representatives, also inspected the affected area and assessed the damage.
Authorities have begun conducting damage assessments, while temporary arrangements for food and shelter have been made for affected families. Officials assured that necessary relief and rehabilitation measures are being taken on priority.
