Pune, 1st July 2026: Metro expansion plans received a major boost as the Kalyani Nagar–Pune International Airport Metro corridor was officially finalised.

Alongside the airport link, the proposed Vanaz–Chandani Chowk Metro extension will now be redesigned to include a double-decker flyover from Paud Phata to Vandevi Temple, a move aimed at improving both metro connectivity and traffic flow on one of the city's busiest roads.

The decisions were taken during a high-level review meeting at Maha Metro headquarters, where Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol reviewed ongoing metro projects with officials from Maha Metro and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The meeting focused on improving project execution and accelerating Pune's expanding metro network.

The biggest change approved during the meeting is on the Vanaz–Chandani Chowk Metro corridor. Instead of the earlier proposal for a vehicular flyover only between Paud Phata and Karve Putala, the revised plan calls for a double-decker structure extending up to Vandevi Temple, with the metro line running above the roadway.

The integrated structure is expected to reduce congestion on Paud Road, improve connectivity towards Warje, and ease traffic movement across five major intersections that regularly witness heavy vehicle queues.

Another key proposal discussed was the expansion of the planned Shewalewadi–Hadapsar–Katraj Metro corridor. Mohol directed Maha Metro to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for extending the line further to Chandani Chowk and Wakad. Officials believe the extension will help create a stronger orbital metro network and improve public transport access for rapidly developing western and northwestern suburbs.

"Pune's transport infrastructure must be planned with future demand in mind. All agencies should work in close coordination, resolve project-related issues without delay, and ensure that these important infrastructure projects are completed at the earliest," said Murlidhar Mohol, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation.
