Pune, 2nd July 2025: Pune Metro witnessed a historic surge in ridership during June, with over 5.2 million passengers using the service, the highest ever in a single month. This marked the first time since its inception that Pune Metro crossed the 5 million mark in monthly footfalls. A significant increase in daily commuters was observed across both operational metro routes.

Maha-Metro currently operates services on two routes, Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate, covering a total of 29 stations. On average, around 1.7 lakh commuters travelled daily. The opening of the Khadki metro station and additional entry points at some stations have contributed to the growing convenience and ridership.

The passenger numbers have been consistently rising since January, but June saw a sharp jump of nearly 4 lakh passengers compared to May. The annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage led to an even sharper spike, with ridership increasing by nearly 5 lakh over just two days.

By comparison, last year’s highest single-day ridership was recorded during Ganpati immersion with 3.46 lakh passengers, but the overall monthly count had remained below 5 million.

According to Maha-Metro data, March saw 4.81 million passengers, April had 4.59 million, and May recorded 4.76 million riders. In June, the figure jumped to 5.24 million. Correspondingly, revenue also increased from ₹7.01 crore in March to ₹8.33 crore in June.

One of the major reasons behind the spike is believed to be the fare hike by PMPML from June 1. With PMPML fares starting at ₹10, many regular passengers found the metro more affordable and faster, especially on certain routes. As a result, the metro has gained from commuters switching modes.
