Pune is still awaiting the arrival of the southwest monsoon, with forecasts of thunderstorms and rain largely failing to bring widespread showers to the city. While a few localities have received brief spells of rain, most parts of Pune continue to experience hot and humid weather conditions.
The city recorded a minimum temperature of 25.8°C at Shivajinagar, making it the joint-highest minimum temperature recorded in June since 2019. The maximum temperature on June 9 reached 35.2°C, remaining significantly above the normal level for this time of the year and adding to the prolonged summer-like conditions.
Meteorologists attribute the delayed and weak monsoon activity to the absence of support from the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), a key atmospheric phenomenon that often enhances rainfall over the Indian region. As a result, there is still no clear indication of when Pune will receive its first widespread monsoon rain.
The sluggish start to the season is also reflected at the national level. Nine days into June, India’s cumulative rainfall remains 24.3 per cent below normal, highlighting the slow pace of monsoon advancement across several regions.
Although the monsoon has entered Maharashtra, weather experts say it currently lacks the strength required to generate widespread rainfall. Between June 10 and June 13, light rainfall is expected over parts of Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, while some areas of Vidarbha may receive moderate showers.
The monsoon's progress across the state has remained slow. After entering Maharashtra through Sindhudurg and Kolhapur districts on June 6, it remained nearly stationary for two days before advancing into Solapur district on June 8 and reaching Baramati. However, the system failed to move further on June 9.
With the monsoon yet to advance towards Pune and Mumbai, residents of both cities may have to wait a little longer for the season's first widespread rains. Meanwhile, the Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon has covered the entire Northeast region and West Bengal and is now progressing towards Bihar.
