Pune: Due to the continuous rains for the past few days, the natural beauty of the Katraj Ghat area has flourished abundantly. The entire hilly stretch is wrapped in a green blanket, with fresh foliage, tiny flowing streams and cool weather adding to its charm. This scenic Ghat on the Pune-Satara highway, known mainly for its traffic importance, has now turned into a favourite spot for nature lovers.
As soon as the monsoon sets in, the forests, bushes and trees in this region don fresh green attire. Travellers passing through the Ghat early in the morning are greeted by a thick cover of fog, a gentle breeze and delightful views all around. The misty atmosphere makes this natural beauty even more enchanting. The cries of peacocks echo through the forest while monkeys near the old Katraj tunnel entertain passersby.
Sundays and holidays witness an increasing number of tourists, including city dwellers looking for a quick nature escape. Families are seen capturing memories through photos, while others simply enjoy the serene surroundings. At present, it feels as though nature has organised its own exhibition at Katraj Ghat, attracting people of all ages.
The dense forests, mountains draped in a green shawl, the winding tar road, velvety grass carpets, murmuring streams, overflowing seepage ponds, cascading waterfalls and chirping birds create a picturesque setting. Many travellers halt by the roadside to soak in this beauty, turning the Ghat road into a lively yet peaceful stretch during the monsoon.
At the southern gateway of Pune, the vast Bhilarewadi Forest Division covers about 900 hectares in the Katraj mountain range. The historic Katraj Old Tunnel, Ambil Dhak Matha, naturally flowing springs, Gujar-Nimbalkarwadi and Bhilarewadi lakes with fresh rainwater present an unforgettable sight.
However, improper parking of vehicles in risky spots is common. It is necessary to put up signboards and barricades at such places for safety, but the forest department seems to be neglecting this aspect. Environmentalists urge visitors to cherish this nearby paradise responsibly and ensure the Ghat stays clean and pristine for all to enjoy.
