Pune, 24 January 2026: After the announcement of the municipal election results, the process to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor has officially begun. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started technical preparations for the election and the first meeting of newly elected corporators.
As part of this process, the civic body’s municipal secretary department sent a letter to the Divisional Commissioner on Friday, requesting the scheduling of the mayor and deputy mayor elections and the first general meeting. Based on this timeline, the election is expected to take place in early February, paving the way for Pune to get a new mayor.
The reservation for the mayor’s post was declared on Thursday, and the position has been reserved for a woman from the open category. Following this, names of women corporators from the BJP, the party with the highest number of elected members in the PMC, have begun to emerge as potential candidates for the mayor’s post.
The state government has released a detailed programme for conducting mayor and deputy mayor elections across municipal corporations in Maharashtra. According to this schedule, the PMC has been asked to complete the nomination process shortly after January 26.
The first meeting of newly elected corporators, along with the election of the mayor and deputy mayor, is proposed to be held between January 30 and 31.
The Divisional Commissioner’s office is expected to inform the PMC within the next two days about the date of the first meeting and the appointment of a presiding officer.
Once this is done, the civic administration will move swiftly to complete formalities such as scrutiny of nomination forms, preparation of the meeting agenda, and issuing official invitations to corporators.
The state government has adopted a unified approach this year, as elections to 29 municipal corporations were held together and results were declared on the same day. Officials believe that synchronising mayoral elections will bring administrative consistency and make future election cycles smoother.
However, the tight schedule has put the civic administration under pressure. Normally, these preparations require at least two weeks, but the state programme expects the entire process to be completed within a shorter time frame.
Despite this, officials say that once the presiding officer is appointed, the final date and time for the election can be fixed, making it likely that Pune will welcome its new mayor in the first week of February.
