Pune, 23rd September 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has completed repair work on 21 bridges and flyovers across the city, while work on several other structures is underway. The remaining bridges and culverts identified for repairs will be taken up in phases, depending on the availability of funds.
A structural audit of bridges, flyovers and culverts across Pune was conducted by expert consultants last year. The audit found that 98 bridges and flyovers required repairs. Of these, five structures fall under the defect liability period (DLP), making the concerned contractors responsible for carrying out the necessary repairs.
The PMC's Special Projects Department subsequently took up repair work on the remaining 93 structures. These were divided into A, B and C categories, with the structures requiring urgent attention placed in the A category.
In the first phase, PMC took up repairs of 10 out of 11 identified bridges, while 11 out of 17 bridges were taken up in the second phase. A total of 21 bridges have been repaired under these phases, with work on some remaining structures and bridges included in the third phase currently underway.
The repair work includes replacement of bearings, expansion joints and structural strengthening. PMC has planned the work in a manner intended to minimise disruption to traffic.
"These repairs will help extend the service life of the bridges. The remaining structures will be taken up in phases depending on the availability of funds," said Dinkar Gojare, head of the PMC's Special Projects Department.
PMC has spent around ₹10 crore on the first phase and ₹17 crore on the second phase of bridge repairs. The civic body has allocated ₹8 crore for the third phase, through which repairs to around 14 to 15 bridges are expected to be carried out.
The repair work on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Bridge had been delayed due to water pipeline work. With the pipeline work now completed, PMC is expected to complete the bridge repairs soon.
PMC has also decided to conduct annual inspections of the city's bridges following the structural audit. The inspections will allow the civic body to regularly assess the condition of bridges and take corrective measures when required.
The civic body plans to continue repairing the remaining bridges and culverts in phases, with priority given to structures requiring immediate attention.
