Pune, 19th September 2026: Daily traffic congestion between Rajiv Gandhi Bridge and Bremen Chowk in Aundh has become a major problem for commuters travelling between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. To address the issue, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning a flyover from the Traffic Training School near Bremen Chowk to the Rajiv Gandhi Bridge.
The PMC has allocated ₹2 crore to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed flyover. A consultant will be appointed to study the project and prepare the report before the construction process begins.
Thousands of commuters from Wakad, Hinjawadi, Pimple Nilakh, Pimple Saudagar and Sangvi travel towards Pune for employment, business and education. A similar number travel towards Pimpri-Chinchwad from Pune.
The narrow road between Rajiv Gandhi Bridge and Bremen Chowk causes heavy congestion during morning and evening peak hours. In the evening, traffic queues are frequently seen from Bremen Chowk and Rishi Chowk towards Aundh Police Chowky and Rajiv Gandhi Bridge.
Narrow roads, roadside parking and encroachments further add to the problem.
The PMC is planning the flyover from the Traffic Training School near Bremen Chowk to the Rajiv Gandhi Bridge. Officials said the proposed structure is being considered instead of an underground road because a drain passes through the Bremen Chowk area.
PMC Special Projects Department head Dinkar Gojare explained that the road near Shri Shivaji Vidya Mandir is narrow, while three roads converge at Bremen Chowk, creating a major bottleneck.
“Traffic congestion occurs because of the narrow road near Shri Shivaji Vidya Mandir and the convergence of three roads at Bremen Chowk. The proposed flyover from Rajiv Gandhi Bridge to the Traffic Training School near Bremen Chowk is being planned to address these bottlenecks,” Gojare said.
Deputy Mayor Parshuram Wadekar, MLA Siddharth Shirole, Gojare and PMC Road Department head Rajesh Bankar have inspected the proposed stretch.
The PMC has made a provision of ₹2 crore for preparing the DPR. Once a consultant is appointed and the technical study is completed, the project will move towards the next stage.
Shirole said the flyover is proposed between the Rajiv Gandhi Bridge and the Kasturba Colony area and that the DPR process has already been provided for in the PMC budget.
“The PMC has allocated ₹2 crore for preparing the DPR for the proposed flyover. Once the required procedures are completed, the construction work could be completed within one to one-and-a-half years,” Shirole said.
If the project progresses as planned, the flyover is expected to provide a smoother route for vehicles travelling between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad through Aundh.
Meanwhile, incomplete road widening work is also contributing to congestion in the area. The Motor Vehicle Inspector General's office in Aundh had earlier been an obstacle to road widening. The office has since been shifted, following which the PMC Road Department started the widening work. However, the work remains incomplete.
Road widening near Shri Shivaji Vidya Mandir School is also pending.
Wadekar said the proposed flyover could provide relief to commuters from both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
“The flyover will provide significant relief to citizens travelling between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and help reduce traffic congestion in Aundh,” Wadekar said.
