Pune, 20th May 2026: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) served notice to the Kamla Nehru Hospital after officials found biomedical waste allegedly stored along with regular garbage on the hospital premises.

The notices were issued to the hospital’s medical superintendent and waste management contractor ‘Shree Enterprises’ by the Kasba-Vishrambaug regional office.

The issue came to light after garbage reportedly remained uncleared at the hospital for nearly four days, causing a strong foul smell in the surrounding area. Residents and visitors had raised concerns over the unhygienic conditions created due to the accumulated waste.

Following complaints made to PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, civic officials conducted an inspection and arranged for immediate removal of the garbage. During the process, officials reportedly discovered biomedical waste mixed with regular wet waste.

According to the inspection report, the waste included used diapers, blood-stained clothes, and other medical materials used during patient treatment. Officials stated that storing biomedical and general waste together violated both Solid Waste Management Rules and Biomedical Waste Management Rules.

A regional office inspection carried out on May 16 confirmed the violations. Hospital authorities were instructed to immediately segregate the waste properly and ensure scientific disposal methods are followed. Officials also directed that biomedical waste must be handled separately as per safety guidelines.

The incident has also exposed conflicting claims within the civic administration. PMC Health Chief Dr. Nina Borade had earlier stated that the accumulated waste did not contain biomedical material and was only mixed garbage.

However, the regional office report later confirmed the presence of medical waste, raising concerns that incorrect information may have been shared with senior PMC officials.
