Pune, 4th August 2026: To improve solid waste management, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to hire 250 small garbage collection vehicles (Ghanta Gadis) and 30 compactor trucks on a rental basis. The move comes as the city struggles to keep pace with rising waste generation due to rapid population growth.
According to PMC officials, the additional vehicles will help ensure timely garbage collection and reduce complaints from residents about uncollected waste.
Pune's population has grown to nearly 7 million, while the city generates around 2,800 metric tonnes of waste every day. At present, PMC operates 770 garbage collection vehicles, including 379 owned by the civic body and the remaining hired through contractors.
Officials said the existing fleet is no longer sufficient to cover all areas efficiently. In several localities, garbage collection has been delayed because of the shortage of vehicles, resulting in waste accumulation and increasing complaints from citizens.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajit Nair said civic body has decided to increase the fleet by hiring new vehicles to improve collection efficiency.
The rental contract will include the vehicle, driver, fuel, and one helper. Contractors will be required to operate a minimum of five trips per vehicle every day, ensuring regular waste collection across assigned areas.
PMC believes the additional fleet will reduce the workload on sanitation staff while improving the efficiency of the city's waste collection system. The civic administration expects the new vehicles to help ensure garbage is collected on time and improve overall cleanliness across the city.
