Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is set to induct 500 new CNG buses equipped with an automatic fire suppression system, with passenger safety being given top priority. The system is designed to activate automatically in the event of an engine short circuit or if the engine temperature exceeds the prescribed safety limit. It uses a nitrogen-based fire suppressant to extinguish the fire before it spreads.
According to officials, the mechanism is triggered immediately upon detecting smoke inside the engine compartment, helping prevent potential fire hazards. During an inspection, officials conducted a live demonstration to verify the effectiveness of the safety system.
PMPML will receive the new buses in two phases. The first batch of 250 buses is expected to be delivered over the next two to two-and-a-half months, while the remaining 250 buses will join the fleet over the following two-and-a-half months.
The transport undertaking said all 500 buses are expected to be operational within the next five to six months, strengthening Pune's public transport network.
PMPML Chairman and Managing Director Mahesh Awhad said a prototype of the new bus was inspected jointly with a team from the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT). Based on the inspection, the manufacturer has been advised to make certain modifications before full-scale production begins.
