Pune/Pimpri Chinchwad, 3rd November 2025: On Sunday, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Pune detained a police sub-inspector for taking a bribe of ₹46.5 lakh, which was the first installment of an alleged ₹2 crore demand. The accused, Pramod Ravindra Chintamani, 35, worked with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate.
According to ACB officials, the complainant, a lawyer, had approached them after the officer allegedly demanded money in exchange for helping his client, an accused in a criminal case registered at Bavdhan Police Station.
The client’s father, also arrested in the same case, was in judicial custody. To secure a favourable position during the bail process and investigation, Chintamani allegedly demanded ₹2 crore, ₹1 crore for himself and another ₹1 crore, reportedly for his senior officer.
Following the complaint, the ACB investigated the claims and set up a trap overseen by Superintendent of Police Shirish Sardeshpande, Additional SP Ajit Patil, and officer Arjun Bhosale.
Inspector Prasad Lonare and his team carried out the operation near the Untadya Maruti Temple in Rasta Peth, where Chintamani was apprehended while accepting ₹46.5 lakh from the complainant. The confiscated sum reportedly comprised ₹1.5 lakh in real currency and ₹45 lakh in dummy notes used for the operation.
After the arrest, ACB teams carried out searches at Chintamani's home and workplace situated at Sopaan Residency on Dighi Road, Bhosari. Subsequently, the Samarth Police Station filed a case against him under applicable sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The NCRB 2023 report indicates that Maharashtra registered 763 cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act, marking the highest number in India. Uttar Pradesh followed with 216 cases, highlighting increasing worries about corruption within the state's law enforcement system.
