Pune, 23rd September 2026: The Pune railway division tested 2,132 water samples from 1,401 locations across the division in August and September as part of a drive to ensure safe drinking water at railway premises.
The testing covered drinking water facilities at railway stations, colonies and workplaces. Railway officials said the facilities were inspected and brought under a uniform schedule for water testing and maintenance.
The drive was undertaken by Central Railway (CR) following a recent report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on drinking water safety at railway premises. However, the CAG report did not specifically mention any station in the Pune railway division.
Of the 2,132 samples tested, 50 were found unfit for consumption. Railway officials said corrective measures were taken at the locations where the samples did not meet the required standards.
The water was tested again after the corrective work. Follow-up tests found no bacterial or E. coli contamination, officials said.
Railway officials said the testing and maintenance schedule would help ensure regular monitoring of drinking water facilities across the Pune division and support the supply of safe potable water to passengers and railway staff.
