Pune woke up to widespread rainfall on Wednesday morning after intermittent showers continued through the night. The intensity of the rain increased across the city and suburbs, leading to water accumulation in low-lying areas and slow-moving traffic on several key roads.
The morning rush hour was particularly challenging for commuters, with heavy congestion reported from multiple locations. Residents in the Undri-Katraj Bypass stretch reported being stuck in traffic for over an hour as rain and waterlogged roads disrupted the flow of vehicles.
Along with the city, Pune district's ghat sections and dam catchment areas also witnessed heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Bhira recorded the highest rainfall at 158 mm, followed by Tamhini (110 mm), Pophali (103 mm), Dharavi (86 mm), Davdi (78 mm), Dongarwadi (76 mm), Ambone (75 mm) and Khopoli (74 mm). Lonavala and nearby areas also received significant rainfall.
The widespread rain across the catchment regions has increased inflows into reservoirs and rivers, providing a boost to water storage levels after concerns over delayed monsoon progress earlier this month. Dense fog and active waterfalls were reported across the Western Ghats as rainfall activity intensified.
With more rain expected over the coming days, authorities have advised residents and tourists to remain cautious while travelling through hilly areas and near water bodies.
