

Pune, 27 March 2026: The Senate meeting of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) witnessed major developments on Friday as members raised serious concerns over alleged financial irregularities linked to the tribal department’s 2017–18 tender process.
Right at the beginning of the session, several members demanded immediate action against the university’s technology department head, Dr. Aditya Abhyankar.
They claimed there was substantial evidence pointing toward financial misconduct and urged the administration to suspend him and appoint an inquiry committee.
Members including Vinayak Ambekar, Sachin Gorde Patil, and Apoorva Hire strongly pressed for action, highlighting alleged irregularities in funds received under the tribal research and training initiatives as well as the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan during 2017–18.
Responding to the mounting pressure, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi announced that Dr. Abhyankar would be placed on compulsory leave starting Friday. He also confirmed that a formal inquiry would be initiated to examine the allegations.
Dr. Aditya Abhyankar has been placed on compulsory leave from Friday in connection with the alleged corruption and financial irregularities in the 2017–18 tribal department tenders. A legal review will be conducted, and strict action, including suspension, will be taken if the charges are proven.
