Pune, 2nd July 2026: The much-awaited monsoon has finally picked up pace in the city, bringing rainfall after an unusually long dry spell. The southwest monsoon, which normally reaches Pune around June 11, remained largely inactive throughout June, resulting in one of the driest and hottest starts to the monsoon season in recent years.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune recorded an average maximum temperature of 35.04°C in June 2026, making it the city's warmest June in terms of average daytime temperature since at least 2014. The prolonged absence of rainfall kept temperatures well above normal for most of the month.
Although rainfall has improved with the beginning of July, weather conditions continue to remain a concern. The IMD has indicated that all-India rainfall during July is likely to remain below normal, raising concerns over the progress of the monsoon during one of the country's most important rainy months.
The rainfall deficit in Maharashtra during June was significant. IMD data shows the state received 50% less rainfall than normal, with most districts recording deficient rainfall. Pune district also experienced a major shortfall, ending the month with a 48% rainfall deficit, reflecting the delayed arrival and weak performance of the monsoon.
With monsoon activity now increasing over Pune and surrounding regions, residents have received much-needed relief from the prolonged heat. However, meteorologists say sustained rainfall in the coming weeks will be crucial to reduce the rainfall deficit, improve water availability, and support agriculture across Maharashtra.
