Pune, 5th June 2025: A 25-year-old woman from Kondhwa, Pune, filed a police complaint claiming that an unidentified delivery boy entered her apartment and sexually assaulted her. The woman alleged that the man forced her to open the door under the pretext of delivering a parcel, sprayed her face with a substance, and then attacked her.

She told police that he threatened her, took photos, and fled the spot. The serious nature of the complaint triggered immediate high-level police action, especially as Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on a city visit at the time.

The woman, employed at an IT firm in Kalyani Nagar, resides with her brother in an upscale society in Kondhwa. She was alone at home when the alleged incident occurred. Police teams launched an extensive probe across Pune and beyond, involving around 200 officers. They reviewed hours of CCTV footage, call records, and contacted several courier companies across cities, including Delhi, to track down the supposed accused.

However, the investigation took a surprising turn when it was discovered that the accused was not a stranger, but her 28-year-old boyfriend. The two had been in a physical relationship for over a year, and their families were also familiar with each other.

To avoid suspicion at the society gate, the boyfriend used to pose as a delivery agent during visits, and the woman would confirm his identity to security guards. On the day of the incident, an argument broke out between them after the woman refused intimacy, citing her menstrual cycle.

Police say that after the altercation, the man left the flat, and the woman later decided to file a complaint, falsely describing him as an unknown delivery boy. Before going to the police, she deleted data from her phone and laptop that could expose their relationship. Unaware that a large-scale manhunt had begun, the man continued with his daily routine, including attending a wedding. He was later detained and questioned, at which point the entire backstory surfaced.

Police officials, including DCP Rajkumar Shinde and Kondhwa Senior Inspector Vinay Patankar, confirmed that the woman had fabricated key details in the FIR. The investigation, which initially focused on tracking an unknown accused, was misled by false information. The case has raised concerns about the misuse of police resources and highlights the need for careful verification before launching large-scale probes.
