

Pune, 28 May 2026: A dispute over tobacco inside Yerawada Central Jail led to a violent clash between inmates, following which two prisoners were booked for allegedly attacking a fellow inmate.
According to police, the incident took place around 7 am near the washroom area of a barrack in Circle No. 2 inside the jail premises. The victim inmate was standing near a water tank before entering the toilet when the two accused inmates allegedly approached him and demanded tobacco.
An argument soon broke out between them, which later turned violent. Police said the accused allegedly assaulted the inmate using a small serving measure used for food distribution and a plastic bucket. The victim sustained head injuries in the attack.
Prison guards rushed to the spot after noticing the commotion and immediately brought the situation under control. The two accused inmates were taken into custody inside the jail premises.
A complaint regarding the incident was lodged at Yerawada Police Station by senior prison officer Revanath Kanade. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against the two inmates.
Officials said similar clashes among prisoners have been reported inside the jail in the past. CCTV cameras have been installed across the prison premises to monitor inmate activities and prevent violent incidents.
Police Sub-Inspector Kundan Satre is carrying out further investigation in the case.
