Pune, 5th January 2025: The Pune suburban railway network is on the brink of a major overhaul, as the railway administration has unveiled an expansion plan. The initiative includes the introduction of 60 new suburban trains and the addition of six new platforms across key stations. These upgrades are expected to enhance the speed and comfort of travel for passengers in Pune and its surrounding areas.
The expansion project will see a substantial increase in train services, alongside critical infrastructure upgrades, designed to alleviate traffic congestion and streamline commuter travel.
Currently, 110 suburban trains operate daily on the Pune network. Following the expansion, this number is set to rise to 180, with the Pune-Daund route seeing an increase from 75 to 125 services. The move will directly benefit around 300,000 daily commuters. Presently, five trains depart from Pune; this number will rise significantly, with 110 out of 280 trains now originating from the city.
To support this growth, several stations will undergo major upgrades, including new platforms and enhanced coaching terminals:
Hadapsar: Three new platforms.
Khadki: Platform lengths extended by 3-4 coaches.
Alandi: New coaching terminal, additional pit lines, and stabling facilities.
Uruli (Kanchan): 10 platforms (5 local), 2 pit lines, and expanded stabling capacity.
Fursungi: Five new stabling facilities for suburban trains.
Improved Punctuality: The additional trains will ensure more reliable schedules.
Eased Congestion: More trains will reduce overcrowding on existing services.
Decreased Traffic Congestion: By offering a more efficient rail system, the project will encourage commuters to switch from private vehicles, easing traffic in Pune.
Enhanced Safety: Upgraded platforms and modernized infrastructure will bolster passenger safety.
This major initiative by the Pune Railway Department is set to transform the commuter experience, making travel faster, safer, and more efficient. The project is expected to gain momentum in the coming months.
