Pune, 26 November 2025: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) administration has issued a safety advisory after rumours of a leopard sighting spread across the campus.
A video circulating on social media created concern among students and staff, prompting the university to verify the information with the Forest Department. Officials later confirmed that the clip was from Sindh Society in Aundh and not from the university premises.
Despite the clarification, the university has taken precautionary measures to ensure safety. Students, faculty members, and employees have been asked to avoid unnecessary movement after sunset and before sunrise. The administration has also advised people to walk in groups and remain alert while moving around the campus during low-light hours.
To improve awareness, an information workshop was conducted at the Jaykar Library. Forest Department officer Krishna Hake and rescue team member Kiran Rahilkar explained leopard behaviour, typical movement patterns, and steps to prevent conflict. More than 200 students, faculty, and security personnel participated, along with Dr. Desale, Director of the Jaykar Knowledge Resource Centre.
Following the workshop, the university distributed emergency contact numbers and instructed everyone to report any confirmed leopard sighting immediately. The Forest Department can be contacted at 1926, while the University Security Department is available at 020-48553383 and 020-25621000.
The administration has also urged the campus community not to share unverified photos, videos, or messages related to leopard sightings. Officials said unconfirmed posts could create unnecessary panic, and responsible communication would help maintain safety and support biodiversity protection on the Pune campus.
