Abhishek Sharma is doing more than simply playing T20 cricket; he is outlining what its future could look like. On a humid Tuesday evening at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the 25-year-old left-hander, fondly known as "Puli" (Tiger) by Hyderabad supporters, produced a truly monumental innings. Opening the batting and remaining there until the final delivery, Abhishek systematically tore apart the Delhi Capitals’ bowling to end on an unbeaten 135 from 68 balls.

The innings, the fifth-highest individual score in IPL history, propelled Sunrisers Hyderabad to a formidable 242 for two. Although Nitish Rana produced a fighting half-century, Delhi Capitals’ chase crumbled under sustained pressure from SRH’s youthful bowling attack, ending at 195 for nine. The 47-run win drives SRH decisively into third place on the points table, solidifying their status as serious playoff contenders.

A new template for hitting

Abhishek’s second IPL century was a study in controlled aggression. While he is known for a good time, not a long time approach, assistant coach James Franklin’s plan for him to bat through the 20 overs added a new layer to his game.

  • Rana matchup: DC attempted to exploit Abhishek's supposed weakness against off-spin by using Nitish Rana in the PowerPlay. The move backfired spectacularly; Abhishek hammered 42 runs off just 15 balls of Rana's bowling, including five of his ten sixes.

  • Kishan overdrive: After Travis Head fell to Axar Patel, Ishan Kishan joined the fray. The two left-handers pushed the innings into overdrive, forging a 79-run stand in just 35 deliveries.

  • Equalling the King: With this innings, Abhishek matched Virat Kohli’s record for the most T20 centuries by an Indian batter (9). He also decisively seized the Orange Cap from teammate Heinrich Klaasen.

Malinga’s reverse swing and lethal yorks

Abhishek dominated the first half, but Eshan Malinga turned the second half into a completely one-sided contest. As the older ball started to reverse, Malinga delivered a masterclass in changing his pace and maintaining pinpoint accuracy.

  • Double blow: In the 11th over, Malinga mercilessly dismissed both Nitish Rana and David Miller, with the latter departing for a golden duck after a lethal ball crashed into his middle stump.

  • Death squeeze: Malinga came back to dismiss Tristan Stubbs with a slower ball, ending with bowling figures of 4 for 32.

  • Support cast: The young duo of Sakib Hussain and Harsh Dubey (3 for 12) offered ideal support, with Sakib dismissing KL Rahul just as the DC captain seemed poised to accelerate.

The way we started, we had a plan, we wanted to use the PowerPlay. But the wicket was a bit slow, so we had to re-plan... Franky [James Franklin] wanted me to bat till the 20th over. This is the first time I've batted till the 20th over.

Abhishek Sharma, Player of the Match

The record books at Uppal

  • Future anchor: For most of his innings, Abhishek maintained a control percentage above 90%, a clear departure from the fortuitous innings that marked the early stages of his career.

  • Spin strangle: The dread of Abhishek’s hitting was so intense that DC’s premier spinners, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, were restricted to just two overs each.

  • Sister’s tribute: Abhishek dedicated his record-breaking century to his ailing sister.

  • Left-hand dominance: This was the third consecutive day of breathtaking southpaw performances in the IPL, following Priyansh Arya and Tilak Varma.

Abhishek Sharma has evolved from a powerplay hitter into a high-impact anchor, a Yusuf Pathan-type player who can construct his innings with the control of a Virat Kohli. For the Delhi Capitals, the search for a consistently influential player goes on, as their lacklustre middle order remains a worry. For SRH, the beast has been unleashed, the bowlers are in top form, and the path to the playoffs now steadily runs through Hyderabad.
