Harry Maguire’s 84th-minute header secured a 2-1 victory for Manchester United over Liverpool on Sunday, ending their nearly decade-long wait for a win at Anfield. The result inflicted Liverpool's fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions, a streak not seen in 11 years, and leaves them four points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.
The match began with an opener for Manchester United in just 61 seconds. Bryan Mbeumo sped past Virgil van Dijk and fired home from Amad Diallo’s pass. Liverpool players and fans protested the goal, arguing play should have been stopped for a head injury to Alexis Mac Allister in the build-up, but referee Michael Oliver allowed it to stand. Cody Gakpo eventually equalized for Liverpool in the 78th minute, converting a low cross from Federico Chiesa.
Despite Gakpo hitting the post three times and Mohamed Salah missing two significant opportunities, Liverpool struggled to capitalize on their attacking efforts. United also had their chances, with Bruno Fernandes hitting the outside of the post. Senne Lammens, making a big save from Alexander Isak, impressed in the United goal.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim celebrated his biggest win in charge, marking back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time in his tenure. Maguire admitted the long wait for an Anfield win was "embarrassing" for the club. "Now that’s out of the way let’s try and make it three (wins) on Saturday against Brighton, because we have to start putting a bit more consistency together," Maguire stated.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the scale of the challenge he faces, especially with the team having invested heavily in new players. He attributed the defeat to profligacy in front of goal and defensive lapses. "The reason is we missed far too many chances to win a game of football," Slot said. The loss is another blow to Liverpool's hopes of securing a record 21st English top-flight title this season.
