The margins were always expected to be razor-thin. In a league where the top contenders seldom concede any ground, Sunday’s title-shaping clash at the Etihad Stadium delivered a contest that surpassed even the highest expectations. By the time the final whistle sounded, Manchester City had struck what seemed a potentially decisive blow, earning a 2-1 win over league leaders Arsenal.

While Mikel Arteta’s men still occupy the summit, their once-imposing nine-point lead has been ruthlessly trimmed to just three in the space of a week. With a game in hand and five weeks remaining, the momentum has swung toward the blue side of Manchester. For Pep Guardiola, a seventh championship in ten seasons is now within touching distance.

Hour of power: Rodri to Haaland

The game turned decisively around the hour mark. Arsenal, having shed the inhibitions of recent weeks, were inches away from taking the lead when Eberechi Eze’s whipped shot struck the inside of the post and rolled across the face of the goal.

Minutes later, City punished the missed opportunity. A flowing move started by Gianluigi Donnarumma saw Nico O’Reilly and Jérémy Doku swap passes before the ball broke to Rodri. As Arsenal’s defenders converged on the midfielder, Erling Haaland found the pocket of space he needed. He swept the ball home, turning the tide of the match and, perhaps, the season.

Cherki Spark and the Donnarumma Gift

The game kicked off at a furious tempo. Rayan Cherki gave City the lead in the 16th minute with a stunning solo run, weaving past Gabriel Magalhães and cutting inside Declan Rice before slotting home with a composed finish.

However, the lead was short-lived due to a disaster for Donnarumma. Attempting to clear possession flush to his own byline, the Italian keeper’s heavy touch allowed an opportunistic Kai Havertz to charge down the clearance and level the score immediately.

Battle of the giants: Haaland vs. Gabriel

The individual duel between Haaland and Gabriel Magalhães pulsed with physical intensity. The pair were forehead-to-forehead for much of the second half, with Gabriel fortunate to escape a red card in the 84th minute after making an aggressive movement toward the Norwegian.

I scored the goal – I won the battle over him in that decisive moment. It’s for other people to decide if I won the battle overall. Every game now is a final.

"Game on"

Despite the heavy celebrations from the City camp at full-time, Pep Guardiola was quick to temper expectations, while Mikel Arteta remained defiant.

It gives us hope. Enjoy the moment but don’t lose focus right now as we have three or four long weeks left. Who is top of the league? We are not. But of course, we have hopes and still extend the chance to fight until the end.

Pep Guardiola

We came here to win the game. The reality is in the two boxes was the difference. It’s a new league now. We’re not going to stop and we’re going to go again, that’s for sure. Game on.

Mikel Arteta

Return of the captain

Arteta took a bold approach by immediately restoring Martin Odegaard to the starting lineup after his return to fitness, pushing Eze out to the flank and deploying Havertz as a false nine. The adjustment improved Arsenal’s technical quality and ball retention, but they ultimately failed to capitalize on their late dominance. Gabriel struck the post with a deflected header, and Havertz squandered a close-range stoppage-time header that could have salvaged a draw.

Run-in

  • April anxiety: Arteta’s poorest month continues; he averages just 1.48 points per game in April compared to Guardiola’s dominant 2.53.

  • "Cannavaro" moment: Haaland heaped praise on Bernardo Silva for a late, goal-saving header that prevented the ball from reaching Viktor Gyokeres.

  • Injury watch: City may face Wednesday’s trip to Burnley without Rodri, who was forced off with a groin problem.

  • History repeating? The match was the latest into a season City had faced the league leaders since April 2012, when they famously beat Manchester United 1-0 en route to the title.

For 206 days this season, Arsenal have sat at the summit. Now, they find themselves in a new league where every remaining fixture carries the weight of a final. City have found their late-season gear shift, and with Haaland winning his individual duels and Cherki providing the creative spark, the champions look hungry for a seventh crown.
